At Eastern High School in Middletown, Kentucky, Spencer played basketball as a junior and a senior and was an all-state selection.

Spencer played basketball for the Louisville Cardinals while he was a student at the University of Louisville. He became the all-time field goal percentage leader in 1989–90, taking over the center position after Pervis Ellison left.

After the player was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves as a rookie, he managed to average 7.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while shooting 51.2% from the floor. With 272 offensive rebounds at the season’s end, he had the seventh-most in the NBA.

Felton’s efforts earned him a spot on the second team of the NBA All-Rookie team that year. He was later traded to the Utah Jazz. He had a career-high field goal percentage of 52.0% during this time, ranking second on the team.

The sportsman was acquired by the Orlando Magic on August 10, 1996, but he only appeared in one game for Orlando before being traded to Golden State. He continued to perform well in the middle during his 71 games for the Warriors, finishing second on the team in rebounding and third in blocked shots.

After the athlete’s retirement from playing in 2001–2002, Spencer worked as a security guard at Atherton High School (Louisville). Spencer was an assistant basketball coach at Spalding University in 2011 and later at Bellarmine University.
