The Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich was ordered to be arrested on spying charges by Moscow’s Lefortovo district court on 30 March.

Gershkovich denied the espionage accusations by the Federal Security Service (FSB) during the court proceedings, as per TASS news agency.

The FSB accused Gershkovich of spying on the American government’s interests and claimed they had stopped his illegal activities.

According to the FSB, Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg while attempting to access classified information on the Russian military-industrial complex enterprise.

The reporter was held in pre-trial detention until May 29. He could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

The Wall Street Journal denied the allegations made by the FSB and demanded Gershkovich’s immediate release. They expressed solidarity with him and his family.
