Zimbabwe’s Vice president, Constantino Chiwenga, ended his marriage with Mary Mubaiwa in 2019 by giving her a traditional token of US $100, known as “gupuro” in Shona.
Constantino sent a former army unit commander, Retired General Anselem Sanyatwe, to deliver the money to Mubaiwa.
High Court Judge Justice Owen Tagu confirmed this action and stated that the marriage had already dissolved when Chiwenga filed for divorce.
The judge declared that the union between Chiwenga and Mubaiwa had ceased to exist by the time the divorce proceedings started.
Further discussions about custody, financial support, and property rights were deferred until a trial, pending Mary’s ability to pursue the matter.
Mary, who faces health issues and legal charges, including money laundering and attempted murder against Constantino, did not respond to calls for comment.
