Baseera Khan graduated with a B.F.An in drawing/painting and sociology from the University of North Texas, and the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art and Planning with an M.F.A. in 2012. They completed their course at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture program.
Khan was an artist in residence at Pioneer Works in Red Hooks, Brooklyn, in 2018. Additional scholarships and residencies include an artist residency at the Abrons Arts Center (2016-17), an international travel fellowship to Jerusalem/Ramallah through Apexart(2015), and a Process Space artist residency at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (2015).
For Meta’s Manhattan office complex in the historic James A. Farley Building, Khan was commissioned in 2022 to construct a series of sculptures based on the form of a Corinthian column, although one that seems to have been toppled and covered in handmade silk rugs from Kashmir.
In an interview, Baseera stated that she grew up in a weirdly structured family. She has a brother Aleem who was like a best friend to her, and her older brother and sister, Khaleel and Matheen, respectively.
She said that her older brother and sister were like her parents, cool parents, and then her parents were like her grandparents.
They didn’t have many friends outside of the little pot of land they had rented.
