After the announcement of retirement in July 2021 by one of the distinguished figures in Australian television, fans are starting to ponder about  Journalist Rod Young’s family and childhood. He quit his acclaimed Journalist career after a spanning career of more than 4 decades leaving his appreciators sad!

Rod Young is a retired broadcaster, newsreader and a Journalist. He was born in 1951 in Brisbane, Australia. His exact birth date is unknown but as of 2023, Rod is 72 years old. 

When he was just 5 years of age, this veteran newsreader moved in with his grandparents. He grew up a happy and enjoyable childhood in his grandparents’ house in Gold Coast.

Being an ambitious man, Rod, while in university, was working for Telecom. He even signed up for a radio announcer’s course at 4BH in Brisbane. Luckily, his talent and interest were noticed by the manager of 4BH and offered him a position. This all happened when he was still Twenty Four! 

Later, Young presented the “Seven News Brisbane” from 2013 to 2016. with Kay McGrath, also a former Australian journalist. His bulletin was even labeled as the top-rating news service in Brisbane. 

His career went over the roof after he started working in the radio station, 2GO on the New South Wales. He was then appointed the weeknight newsreader on the ABC in 1985.

Rod met the love of his life Karen in his 20s. 

During his life in the Queensland university, Young got close to Karen Berkman who later became the most important person in his life, his wife.

Karen and Rod shared similar interests. Karen is a journalist and a documentary maker in Gold Coast and has even worked together with Rod’s television wife, Kay McGrath. Kay in an interview revealed that Karen always described her husband as “tall, dark and handsome”.

In the 1980s, Karen and her husband took a break from their work to travel overseas for about three months.

But the refreshing vacation made it impossible for both to keep a track of time! Only after a whole year passed, they returned to Australia and started a family.

The couple together have three children and they live in Gold Coast, Hinterland. Their first son was born in 1983, after which, Rod took another break from his work and remained a house husband for years.

After two years were up, he finally returned to the ABC as the weekend weather presenter. Journalist Rod Young family loves to spend time on the beach.

McGrath, a Young’s fellow presenter at News 7 is regarded has his television wife!

Journalist Rod Youngs parents

Young was born in his parents house at Meandarra. His parents were farmers and owned a farm. His mom and dad ran a sheep and cattle property on the western edge of the Darling Down.

He grew up in Brisbane where he attended Queensland University to study arts. As morning shows the day, Rod excelled in his education.

The news presenter always keeps his family first, even before his career. Even though Rod shifted to Brisbane in 1956, and was shining in his career, he left radio for several years to work on the family farm in Meandarra.

Only when Young’s family relocated to the Gold Coast after selling the sheep and cattle property, Rod went back to join the radio.

The retired journalist is a jolly old person, loved by everyone who works with him. His witty jokes are always appreciated by all. He enjoys blues and rock ‘n’ roll, long walks and reading.

Kay McGrath, in an interview said, “Behind Rod’s often serious exterior lurks a quirky sense of humor. He makes me laugh often, sometimes to the point of tears, but the make-up artist usually fails to see the joke.”
