Mr. Carter has recently overcome several health crises, including a fight with melanoma, which spread to his liver and brain, and multiple falls.

Likewise, the former president underwent elective surgery on 3 August 2015 to remove a tiny mass on his liver, and his prognosis for a full recovery was initially stated to be favorable.
