The Carter Center announced on 18 February 2023 that the 39th U.S. President would remain at his residence and “receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.” Carter lives in Plains, Georgia.

Reportedly, he fell and broke his hip on 13 May 2019. The same day, he received surgery at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia.

He received 14 stitches on his forehead above his left brow following another fall at home on 6 October 2019. After the incident, the former president was later seen in public with a black eye.

Carter had fallen three times at his residence in 2019. The retired politician was brought to the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center on 21 October after sustaining a slight pelvic fracture.

On 3 November 2019, the retired politician returned to instruct Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church.

Furthermore, Carter was admitted on 11 November 2019 to the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He received treatment to relieve pressure on his brain from bleeding related to his falls.

He successfully underwent surgery on 27 November. Carter was readmitted to the hospital on 2 December for urethritis but was released on 4 December.

The Carter Center released a public post announcing,

Following a series of short hospital visits, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter elected to spend his remaining time at home with his family and accept hospice care rather than additional medical intervention. The Carter family requests privacy during this difficult loss and expresses gratitude to his many admirers.

Mr. Carter has recently overcome several health crises, including a fight with melanoma, which spread to his liver and brain, and multiple falls.

Likewise, the former president underwent elective surgery on 3 August 2015 to remove a tiny mass on his liver, and his prognosis for a full recovery was initially stated to be favorable. 

Also, Mr. Carter had been diagnosed with metastatic Cancer but did not indicate where the Cancer had originated. 

Carter revealed on 20 August that melanoma had been discovered in his brain and liver. Also, he had begun treatment with the immunotherapy medicine pembrolizumab and was set to begin radiation therapy. 

Emory Healthcare of Atlanta was in charge of his medical care. On 6 December 2015, he published a statement declaring that his medical tests had revealed no evidence of malignancy.
