Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek-Nigerian professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Antetokounmpo’s country of origin, in combination with his size, speed, strength, and ball-handling talents, has given him the nickname “Greek Freak.”

Antetokounmpo, born and reared in Athens to Nigerian parents, began playing basketball with the Filathlitikos youth teams in Athens. He began playing for the club’s senior squad in 2011 before entering the 2013 NBA draft, where he was taken 15th overall by the Bucks.

In 2016-17, Antetokounmpo led the Bucks in all five major statistical categories, becoming the first player in NBA history to complete a regular season in the top 20 in all five categories: total points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.

A Greek Orthodox priest in Athens’ Sepolia neighborhood who christened Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brother Alexandros on October 28, 2012, recently went out about his relationship with the NBA sensation and his family.

Several years ago, Antetokounmpo had a particular bond with Father Evangelos Ghanas, a beloved priest at Agios Meletios Church.

The NBA star chose to be christened Greek Orthodox on “OXI Day,” Greece’s second most important national event, and the date of his baptism.

Antetokounmpo’s patriotism and reverence for the Greek flag have frequently been lauded; for example, when his Greek supporters in the United States wanted him to sign the blue-and-white flag for them, he refused.

Antetokounmpo was the link between his family and the parish. The years he spent at Agios Meletios Church and their Sunday School in the poor Sepolia neighborhood were crucial in the young man’s journey to adulthood and undoubtedly shaped his character.

Charles Antetokounmpo was a professional footballer from Nigeria. He was well-recognized for being Giannis’ father. Except for Francis, he and the rest of the family moved to Athens in pursuit of a better life for the family. His family held him in high regard; however, he died in September 2017 of cardiac arrest at 54.

Veronica Antetokounmpo is a former professional high jumper from Nigeria. Antetokounmpo is the mother of five professional athletes, the most well-known of whom is Giannis Antetokounmpo. There is currently no information available concerning her birth.

Charles and Veronica have a total of five children. Four are NBA players or have played in the NBA, and Francis has played professional football. Francis, their eldest child, was reared in Nigeria by his grandparents. Their children’s names are Francis, Thanasis, Giannis, Kostas, and Alex, from oldest to youngest.
