Garrett was born on August 10, 1967, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, U.S. By considering his birth date, as of  2024, he is 56 years old, and his birth sign is Leo. Since he was born in the U.S., the surfer holds American citizenship.

His mother moved the family to Central America when he was a young child, where she suffered martial abuse and occasionally left him and his brother.

At one point, a Guatemalan farmer tried to adopt him, but his mother later returned and brought the family back to the United States.

After his mother left him with his birth Father, he returned to Berkeley. Mcnamara remained with him until his mother returned in 1978 with a new domestic partner, who transferred the family to the North Shore of Hawaii.

At age eleven, he started surfing at Sunset, Waimea, and the outer reefs in the quest for massive swells, following in the footstep of his younger brother. 

Likewise, at seventeen, he completed his coveted Triple Crown of Suffering Series and finished in the top 10. He then started to attract sponsors.

He and his girlfriend Keali’i Mamala rode the tsunami-like wave in South-Central Alsaka in 2007, captured on camera for a feature film.

By catching waves as tall as 78 feet in Praia do Norte, Portugal, in 2011 and as tall as an estimated 100 feet there. In 2013, he also broke world records for big wave surfing.
