Gabriel Fernandez case details
Gabriel Fernandez was an eight-year-old boy who lived with his mother and her boyfriend for eight months. Unfortunately, during that time, he was subjected to unimaginable brutality.
The systematic abuse included physical beatings, being forced to eat cat litter, faeces, and spoiled foods, and being burned with cigarettes. He was shot with a BB gun, pepper-sprayed, and had his teeth knocked out with a bat.
To make matters worse, while Gabriel was being abused, his mother and stepfather would laugh, according to his siblings.
The abuse continued until Gabriel stopped breathing, and his mother called 911 and took him immediately to the hospital.
When the first emergency personnel arrived, they found him on the ground naked with several injuries. Despite the hospital’s best efforts, Gabriel was declared brain dead and passed away.
Pearl Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre were arrested on May 23, 2013. Pearl was charged with felony child endangerment, while Isauro Aguirre was arrested for attempted murder.
When Gabriel died, Fernandez and Aguirre were charged with first-degree murder with exceptional circumstances of torture, and prosecutors pursued the death penalty.
In the end, Pearl pleaded guilty to her charge on February 15, 2018, as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty. She was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.
Meanwhile, Isauro Aguirre pleaded not guilty to the charge of first-degree murder with exceptional circumstances of torture.
