Johnson became a social studies teacher at Jenner Academy Elementary and George Westinghouse College Prep, both part of the Chicago Public Schools system. 

Johnson entered politics in 2018 when he ran for the Cook County Board of Commissioners’ 1st district seat. He defeated the incumbent Richard Boykin in the Democratic primary and won the general election unopposed. He was reelected in 2022.

As a county commissioner, he advocated for progressive policies such as reducing fares on public transit, reopening mental health clinics, and increasing youth employment.

Brandon’s wife is Stacie Rencher-Johnson, whom he met at a religious event when he was 22 years old. They got married on December 22, 1998.

Stacie has a bachelor’s degree in political science from North Central College and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia College Chicago.

Johnson decided to run for mayor of Chicago in late 2020, after being dissatisfied with the incumbent Lori Lightfoot’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, police reform, and education issues.

He received endorsements from several labor unions, progressive groups, and elected officials, including Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Congressman Chuy Garcia.

Johnson faced eight other candidates in the first round of the mayoral election on February 28, 2023. He came in second place with 23% of the vote, behind Vallas who had 25%.

Johnson and Vallas advanced to a runoff election on April 4, 2023. In the runoff election, Johnson defeated Vallas by a margin of 54% to 46%.
