Stoops’s son, Drake achieved recognition as a Semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and was honored as an Academic All-Big 12 First Team member.

Bob Stoops, the head coach grew up in Youngstown, Ohio as one of the six children in the Stoops family. His dad, Ron Sr., was deeply involved in football.
Mr. Stoops served as the long-time defensive coordinator for Cardinal Mooney High School’s football team. At Cardinal Mooney, Bob and his three brothers were all coached by their father.
Nonetheless, a tragic incident unfolded during a game in 1998 when Ron Sr. began feeling unwell and experiencing chest pains. Right after coaching against Ron Jr’s team, Bob’s dad was taken by the ambulance and sadly passed away on the way to the hospital
