Kemal, a prominent Turkish politician, was born on December 17, 1948, to parents Kamer Kılıçdaroğlu and Yemuş Kılıçdaroğlu. His Father worked as a clerk-recorder of deeds, and he was the fourth of seven children.
He was born in Ballıca village, located in the Nazımiye district of Tunceli Province in the eastern part of Turkey.
Kılıçdaroğlu comes from the Cebeligiller family, which is part of the Kureyşan tribe, a prominent Zaza tribe. His Father changed their family name from Karabulut to Kılıçdaroğlu in the 1960s, as everyone in their village had the same last name.
This decision was made when thousands of Alevis were exiled following the failed Dersim rebellion.
In 1974, Kılıçdaroğlu married his relative Selvi Gündüz, who was a former Journalist. The couple has three children: a son named Kerem and two daughters named Aslı and Zeynep. They also have a granddaughter from Aslı’s marriage.

He was appointed as the deputy director general of the Revenues Department in the Ministry of Finance 1983. During this time, he worked closely with Prime Minister Turgut Ozal.
After serving the Social Insurance Institution for nearly two decades, Kilicdaroglu retired from civil service in January 1999. Then, he decided to enter politics and joined Bülent Ecevit’s Democratic Left Party (DSP).
He was often called the “star of the DSP,” and many people thought he would be the DSP’s candidate in the general election 1999, which the DSP won.
