Yeonmi Park Brother and Sister: Where Are Her Siblings Now?

Yeonmi Park is an activist and defector who was born to parents Jīn Sik and Byeon Keun Sook in Hyesan, Ryang gang, North Korea, on October 4, 1993.

Park is not just her parents’ sole child. Park has two siblings named Eunmi and Hyesan.

On the other side, her father was a government employee jailed for smuggling. Her mother is a nurse who works for the North Korean military.

In a 2004 court trial, Park’s father was found guilty and given a hard labor term at the Chungsan reeducation camp.  

After that, The Park sisters were forced to cease attending school due to her father’s expulsion from the Workers’ Party of Korea and their loss of income, and their living conditions deteriorated.

In 2003, they moved to Park’s mother’s hometown of Kowon, temporarily sending her to live with her aunt in Song Nam-Ri.

Her father was falsely released from jail on sick leave in 2005 after offering the warden a sizable bribe, even though her mother had been detained for a month for changing her address without permission.

Park’s father encouraged the family to make plans for their escape to China when they were reunited.

Unfortunately, Eunmi, her older sibling, unexpectedly left for China. Park and her family escaped North Korea through China with the aid of smugglers of North Koreans into China out of concern that they would be punished for Eunmi’s escape.

They were assisted in moving to Mongolia by Chinese and Korean Christian missionaries, and in 2009, South Korean officials facilitated the family’s move to Seoul. Park then started working full-time as a North Korea advocate for human rights.

Later, The South Korean National Intelligence Service notified Park that her sister, Eunmi, had escaped prison by traveling through China and Thailand to South Korea in April 2014. Eunmi and Park finally got back together.
