American Tristen Jamal Newton plays collegiate basketball for the Big East Conference’s UConn Huskies.

The basketball player was a four-year letterman at Burges High School in El Paso, Texas, where he played before entering college.

Tristen has an older brother named Jawnaun Newton, a graduate transfer guard at Southern Illinois after a three-year career at Evansville.
He is a year older than his brother and was born on January 1, 2000, in El Paso, Texas. Since they were four and five years old, they had been battling each other on the basketball court.
As both the Newton brothers are basketball players, they faced each other off for the first time in 2019 when Tristen was a freshman and played for East Carolina, and Jawnaun was a sophomore from Evansville.
The game took an unexpected turn when a referee, who was unaware that the players were brothers, outed the younger Newton sibling for picking on his older brother and cautioned him with penalties if he didn’t stop.
Neither of them shook hands before the game began, nor did they guarded one another. In contrast to his brother, Jawaun, according to him, was an opponent. But, as the now-UConn Huskies player came from the locker room to conduct a post-game radio interview, they hugged each other. Following that, they switched jerseys and posed for family pictures.

The basketball player was born in Pensacola, Fla, on April 26, 2001. As of 2024, he is 23.
At East Carolina, Newton had success, making the starting lineup as a freshman and averaging 11 points and 3.7 assists per game. He broke the freshman record for most assists in a season for the Pirates.
His basketball performance increased over the course of the following two seasons, peaking in his junior year when he averaged 17.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and five assists per game.
At the end of the season, he was selected for the second team of the American Athletic Conference (AAC).
He decided to leave East Carolina after Joe Dooley was fired following the 2021–22 season. After entering his name in the NCAA transfer portal, he had inquiries from over 30 institutions.
He ultimately enrolled at the University of Connecticut (UConn), where head coach Dan Hurley regarded his playmaking as crucial for his Big East Conference team.
