At 27, he fell from the 3rd floor of the ABBA hotel in Huesca, where he was staying with his team before their match with SD Huesca.

Novo was immediately transported to Zaragoza hospital, where he spent 51 days undergoing various surgeries. Despite his brave battle, he was left with permanent damage and had to use crutches for the rest of his life.

The accident left him with irreversible spinal cord injuries, forcing him to abandon his football career.

Before his injury, Novo played 208 matches and scored 26 goals in his football career from 2012 to 2018.

Though his accident ended his football career, Novo’s resilience and determination have inspired many. He has continued to impact the world of sports through his advocacy and work in wheelchair tennis.

Pelayo Novo Cause Of Death

Ex-Spanish footballer Pelayo passed away at 32 on February 28, 2023, after reportedly being hit by a train in his hometown of Oviedo.

Novo was a well-known figure in the Spanish sporting community and was admired by many for his strength and determination. He started his athletic career as a soccer player, but after a devastating fall from a hotel floor, he switched to wheelchair tennis.

Numerous past teams and clubs with which Novo was associated have paid tribute to him in his death.

Real Oviedo, where Novo served as the captain of their Foundation, posted a heartfelt message on Twitter, stating, “With a broken heart. We deeply regret the death of Pelayo Novo, captain of our Foundation. Family, friends: we are with you. Rest in peace, Pelayo.”

Elche Club, where Novo played for several years, also paid tribute to the athlete on social media, writing, “Broken by pain. We will always remember you as a warrior who gave everything for our shirt. One of ours. Rest in peace, Pelayo.”

Pelayo’s untimely death has left a void in the Spanish sporting community and will be greatly missed.

It was challenging when Novo played his first three full seasons as a senior player in Segunda División B since he was pressured to perform at his highest level and contribute to his team’s success.

Yet, he kept working hard and eventually led his club to a sixth-place finish by scoring seven goals in 34 games. It was a great success for the young player and motivated him even more.
