Although John has maintained a private lifestyle, he grew up in a stable family with his brother and followed Christianity.

Police Major Bob Louis Ordiz told GMA integrated News in Filipino,
They voluntarily surrendered to our station because there was a threat to their lives. They got scared for their safety, so they decided to come here.
John was a good athlete, and his parents supported his basketball career from childhood.
He was good in hands-on defense, court vision, and kicking out a pass to open teammates.
