Yara was born on February 10, 2000, to her father Afshin Shahidi, and her mother Keri Salter Shahidi. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her father is of Iranian heritage while her mother Keri is of African- American and Choctaw heritage.
Afshin is one of the main photographers for the musician Prince until he died in 2016. The most interesting thing is that Prince also kept a signed photo of Yara in his editing suit at Paisley Park, which can be seen on VIP Tour.
