Julian Leeser was born in Sydney in 1976 to John and Sylvia Leeser.

His father John was an accountant who came from a Jewish family that escaped Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

His mother Sylvia was a fifth-generation Australian whose father was a survivor of the Burma Railway during World War II.
