During Christine’s advocacy campaign in 2001 to decrease class sizes in New York City public schools, Nixon crossed paths with Marinoni, who was then working as an education organizer.

The two formed a close bond and remained friends throughout Nixon’s divorce from Mozes in 2003, as reported by The Advocate. Their friendship endured and grew stronger during this period.
