The court gave him a suspended sentence of seven years, with five years of probation and 300 hours of community service.
He completed his community service in 1989 and did not serve time in prison.

Gary resided in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was going through a separation from his wife, June, when the shooting occurred.
Psychological evaluations presented during the case revealed that he had experienced a temporary state of psychosis due to the abuse his son had endured at the hands of Doucet.

Unfortunately, Leon suffered a stroke in 2011 and passed away in 2014 at a nursing home, just weeks before his 69th birthday.
