Deborah’s battle with leiomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer with fewer than 300 recorded cases worldwide, began with a persistent cough in 2019.

However, the breakthrough came unexpectedly when a waiter accidentally bumped into her, breaking a rib.
A subsequent CT scan revealed a plum-sized mass in her pulmonary artery.
This marked the start of a grueling journey, including open-heart pulmonary artery surgery with only a 5–10% chance of survival.
Miraculously, she pulled through, defying the odds and demonstrating remarkable strength.
In April 2021, Deborah underwent a pneumonectomy to remove her left lung, followed by proton radiation therapy.
Despite these interventions, the cancer returned in 2022, which led to an emergency surgery in April 2023 involving three specialists who removed additional tumors and addressed complications from her earlier lung surgery.
The procedures were so intricate that doctors replaced damaged tissue with her pectoral muscles and used a breast implant to stabilize her chest.
Through it all, Deborah has endured months of chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy.
She also underwent treatment at Penn, where her daughter is completing a Ph.D. in immunology and oncology.
Deborah’s fight has not been her own. Her journey has inspired an outpouring of support from her friends, community, and even strangers who were moved by her story.
Finck’s nearly five-year battle with cancer came to an end as she passed away on 14th January 2025, leaving behind a legacy of courage, strength, and love.
