Tsarnaev was described by his classmates and teachers as a friendly, smart, and popular student who excelled in wrestling and was interested in music and cars.

He enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2011, where he studied marine biology before switching to engineering.

However, behind this seemingly normal facade, Dzhokhar was also influenced by his older brother Tamerlan, who had become more religious and radicalized over the years.

After the bombings incident, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found guilty of all 30 charges against him, including using a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property, and was sentenced to death in 2015.

His sentence was later reduced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a federal appeals court overturned his death sentence in 2020.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Parents  – who are they?

Anzor Tsarnaev and Zubeidat Tsarnaeva are the father and mother of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

They fled their war-torn homeland in the 1990s and moved to Kyrgyzstan, where Dzhokhar was born, and then to Dagestan, a republic in Russia’s North Caucasus region.

They later moved to the United States in 2002, seeking asylum and a better life for their family.

Anzor Tsarnaev worked as a mechanic, while Zubeidat Tsarnaeva worked as a cosmetologist. They were devout Muslims who followed their customs and traditions.

Dzhokhar parents divorced in 2011, and both returned to Russia in 2012.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva was accused of shoplifting $1600 worth of clothes from a department store, but she fled to Russia before her trial. Anzor Tsarnaev also had health problems.

Dzhokhar parents were shocked and devastated by the news of their son’s involvement in the bombing.

They maintained their innocence and claimed that they were framed by the US government. They also expressed grief over the death of their elder son, Tamerlan, who was killed by the police during a shootout.

Dzhokhar parents have not returned to the US since then. They live in separate apartments in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan.

They rarely speak to the media or their relatives in the US. They have not seen their surviving son, Dzhokhar, since his arrest.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was of Chechen descent, an ethnic group that originates from the North Caucasus region of Russia. 

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was also an American citizen, who had attended school and college in Massachusetts.

Tsarnaev brothers’ radicalization and involvement in the bombing remain a mystery and have been attributed to various factors, such as personal grievances, social isolation, online propaganda, and family influence.
