She is the daughter of Nonyem Aduba. Tragically, her mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and sadly lost her battle with the disease in November 2020.

However, her mother’s life was a testament to resilience, having survived polio and the Igbo genocide during Nigeria’s civil war in the late 1960s.

Uzo’s mother named her Uzoamaka, which translates to “the road is good” in Igbo, reflecting the hopeful outlook she instilled in her daughter.

Uzoamaka Nwanneka Aduba, an Emmy Award-winning actress, was born to Nigerian parents and raised in Medfield, Massachusetts. Her roots trace back to the Igbo tribe; she proudly represents her Nigerian ethnicity.

After completing her education at Medfield High School in 1999, Aduba pursued her studies at Boston University. There, she focused on classical voice training while showcasing her athletic abilities as a competitive track and field athlete.

Coming from a family deeply involved in sports, Aduba’s passion for acting was ignited in 2003 when she received acclaim for her performance in Translations of Xhosa at the Olney Theatre Center for the Arts.

This remarkable achievement earned her a nomination for the prestigious Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play.

In 2012, she debuted on television, portraying a nurse on Blue Bloods. In the play Venice at The Public Theater in New York, she further showcased her talent by portraying Anna, the main character’s mother.
