Rowan Atkinson was born on January 6, 1955, in Consett, County Durham, England. He is the youngest of four boys, and his parents were Eric Atkinson, a farmer and company director, and Ella May Bainbridge, a teacher. 

Among his siblings, he has three older brothers named Paul, Rodney, and Rupert. Paul sadly passed away when he was a child.

Rodney, an economist, ran for the UK Independence Party leadership in 2000, while there is not much information about Rupert.

Atkinson pursued his education in electrical engineering at Newcastle University and later at The Queen’s College. Atkinson’s talent in comedy became evident at the Edinburgh Festival, where he gained fame for his sketch.

In 1990, Atkinson married Sunetra Sastry, a makeup artist, and they have two children together, Benjamin and Lily. Benjamin chose a career in the British Army, while Lily pursued her interests in singing and acting.

After 25 years of marriage, Atkinson and Sastry divorced in 2015. Following the divorce, Atkinson entered a relationship with Louise Ford, an actress, in 2013. They have a child named Isla, born in 2017.
