According to his personnel file, he completed his high school education at Fridley before enrolling at North Hennepin Community College.

Tou Thao attended community college while also working as a security guard. After a two-year hiatus, he returned to Police employment in 2012.

Thao received six complaints, but none resulted in disciplinary action.

Tou Thao said during his testimony at the trial that he was unaware that Floyd was experiencing medical issues until he was whisked away in an ambulance.

As a result of their conviction on federal charges related to the deadly arrest of George Floyd, Tou Thao and two other former policemen received jail sentences in 2022.
