Therapist Of Erik Menendez, Dr. Jerome Oziel Mistress Judalon Smyth Testified The Menendez Brothers Confession
Dr. Jerome Oziel played a vital role in the Menendez brothers’ case as the therapist to whom Erik admitted what happened to their parents- Jose and Kitty Menendez.
Lyle and Erik Menendez are still serving life sentences for the tragic events that happened on August 20, 1989.
Highlights
- Dr. Jerome Oziel’s mistress, Judalon, discovered the confession because Oziel had told her about it.
- Dr. Oziel wanted to end his relationship with Judalon, but for a few months, he moved in with him and his wife, Laurel.
- He mentioned that the brothers had threatened him, which allowed him to speak in court.
At that time, the brothers were 21 and 18 years old when they took the life of their parents in their home in Beverly Hills.
At first, Lyle and Erik Menendez weren’t considered the main suspects.
But about seven months later, the duo were handcuffed when Judalon Smyth went to the police.
The psychologist, Dr. Jerome Oziel’s mistress, Judalon, found out about the confession because Oziel had told her about it, including the fact that there were tapes of Erik’s confession.
Dr. Jerome Oziel Stopped Practicing His Psychology License Following The Menendez Brothers’ Case
In October 1989, two months after the incident, Erik left a message for Dr. Oziel, leading to a Halloween therapy session.

While walking, he suddenly said, “We did it.”
Similarly, Dr. Oziel wanted to end everything he had with his affair with Smyth by October, but it wasn’t easy. For a few months, Judalon Smyth moved in with him and his wife, Laurel.
A few months later, after Dr. Oziel ended his relationship with Judalon Smyth, she went to the police and shared what she knew about Erik’s confession.
Dr. Oziel’s role was more than just listening to the confession.
His testimony was crucial during the trial despite issues with doctor-patient confidentiality.
He mentioned that the brothers had threatened him, which allowed him to speak in court.
After the case, in 1997, Dr. Oziel lost his psychology license after a state panel accused him of breaking confidentiality rules and having inappropriate relationships with female patients.
By then, he had left California and was no longer practicing.

Later, Oziel explained that he didn’t give up his license because of the accusations.
He said he had already stopped practicing because he accepted a new job as CEO of a large company in another state a year ago.
However, Judalon Smyth, who revealed the Menendez brothers’ confession, also claimed that Oziel manipulated her and gave her medications without a license.
As of 2024, Dr. Oziel, now Jerry Oziel, lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He works at the Marital Mediation Center, where he helps couples improve their relationships through mediation instead of getting divorced.
