Fernando Mendoza’s parents, Elsa Mendoza and Dr. Fernando Mendoza Sr., have played a major role in the quarterback’s journey from Miami to college football success and eventually the NFL. Mendoza has repeatedly credited his family for shaping the way he approaches football, leadership, and life. His relationship with his mother has received particular attention because he has openly described Elsa as his biggest supporter and the person who motivates him most.

Fernando Mendoza’s Father Built a Career in Medicine

Fernando Mendoza Sr. grew up in Miami and attended Christopher Columbus High School, where football was already part of his life. He later attended Brown University and competed as a member of the rowing team. His path eventually shifted toward medicine, leading him to study at the University of Florida before completing his medical residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Today, Dr. Fernando Mendoza Sr. works in pediatric emergency medicine at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. His professional career has given Fernando an example of discipline away from the football field. Fernando Sr. has also remained closely involved in his sons’ athletic careers, regularly attending games and publicly expressing pride in the work Fernando and Alberto have put into football.

One of the most meaningful details about Fernando Sr. involves the way he supports his wife at football games. During the 2025 season, he was often seen remaining seated beside Elsa rather than standing during major moments. He later explained that he wanted to stay at her eye level so she would never feel separated from the celebrations around her. That small gesture reflected the close family environment in which Fernando and his brothers were raised.

Elsa Mendoza Became Fernando’s Greatest Inspiration

Fernando’s mother, Elsa Mendoza, whose maiden name is Espino, was also a college athlete. She played tennis at the University of Miami before later raising Fernando and his younger brothers. Elsa was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and the condition eventually affected her mobility to the point that she began using a wheelchair. Fernando has spoken publicly about watching his mother face those challenges while continuing to support her family.

Elsa initially tried to protect her sons from the seriousness of her condition when they were younger. In a personal essay discussed by several publications, she explained that her health became harder to hide as her mobility declined. Fernando responded by keeping her deeply involved in his football journey, regularly sharing updates about college visits, calling before important games, and helping her when everyday activities became difficult.

Their bond became especially visible during Fernando’s Heisman Trophy journey. After receiving the award, he publicly thanked Elsa and described her as his inspiration and his reason for continuing to push forward. He later repeated that message after Indiana’s national championship victory, explaining that his mother’s strength and optimism had provided an example he could carry into his own life and football career.

The connection between Fernando and his mother continued when he entered professional football. He chose to remain with his family in Miami rather than attend the NFL Draft event in person, allowing Elsa to be present when he learned he had been selected with the first overall pick. He later launched the Mendoza Family Fund in partnership with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and pledged $500,000 from his future NFL earnings toward the effort.

The story of Fernando Mendoza’s parents goes well beyond having a talented athlete in the family. Elsa’s resilience and Fernando Sr.’s steady support have remained central to the quarterback’s public story. From his earliest football years to major college honors and professional success, Mendoza has consistently presented his achievements as something shared with the family that supported him long before the national attention arrived.
