Natalie Anne Merchant, aka Natalie Merchant, was born on 26 October 1963 in Jamestown, New York. Outstanding singer and songwriter Merchant has performed in multiple genres, including Alternative rock, pop rock, Americana, and folk rock.

Natalie shot to fame as a member of the band 10,000 Maniacs. In 1981, she began her career with the band as their primary lyricist and lead vocalist.

She performed and released many hit songs with the group. She released her first seven albums with the band, including Human Conflict Number Five. Due to creative control differences, she left the band.

Also, the artist began her solo career in 1993. Merchant has released seven studio albums and many songs in her solo career, including Kind & Generous, Wonder, My Skin, Life Is Sweet, Carnival, Jealousy, These Are Days, Break Your Heart, and more.

Is Natalie Merchant Hospitalized? Her Health Update 2023

No, Natalie Merchant has not been hospitalized in 2023. People often get confused over the topic as she fell ill and ended up in a hospital in July 2014.  

In 2014’s summer, Merchant was supposed to perform her first album of all-new material in Washington, DC. But she canceled all her dates due to her sudden illness.

However, she didn’t reveal her illness at the time while postponing the tour dates. According to Gazette Review, Natalie’s illness was caused due to the stress from her touring. She developed Spinal meningitis. 

Other than that, there is no possible illness and hospitalized news recorded regarding the singer and songwriter.

Speaking of her health update, Merchant looks fine and healthy as of 2024. Also, she announced her eighth studio album, Keep Your Courage, release date in November 2022. Merchant’s album is set to release on 14 April 2023.

Life Is Sweet singer Natalie Merchant was born to Anthony and Ann Merchant. Her family raised her in Jamestown, New York.

Natalie has three siblings and is the middle child of her parents. She is the third of her parents’ four kids.

Regarding her extended family, Natalie’s paternal grandfather was a musician, and his surname was “Mercante” before it was Anglicized.

Her granddad moved from Sicily to the United States, seeking better opportunities. He played the mandolin, accordion, and guitar. 

Natalie’s greatest inspiration to drive her into music was her mother. Her mother, Ann Merchant, listened to the music of Petula Clark and the Beatles and Green. Ann encouraged her kids, mainly her daughter Natalie to study music as a child.

But Natalie’s family didn’t allow her to watch television until she was 12. Regarding her mother’s craze for music, the artist says:

“My mom would often take me to the symphony because she loved classical music. Also, my siblings and I were dragged to see Styx. I was 12 then, and we had to reach Buffalo, New York, driving 100 miles.”

Also, Natalie described that going to the music event with her family was unpleasant as she was too young at the time, and someone threw up at the event. She disliked it and said, “People were smoking pot and it was all terrifying to me.”

However, she remembered the good sides of the event of going with her family as she recalled Styx rising off the stage and playing a white piano. She found it inspirational, which later influenced her music career.

Natalie’s mother had show tunes and soundtracks from West Side Story and South Pacific. Her family liked classical music. Likewise, her Father was a jazz musician.

Her mother tied the knot with her Father because she was into that sort of music.

Merchant’s household did not have a television set between 1988 and 1989. She grew up in a family where no one watched the television news or read the paper.

As she grew older, she realized that her family’s decision to avoid unwanted media was fruitful for her music career. 

Natalie began working in a store at 16. She worked at a food store. With her family’s right guidance, she began her music career in 1981 and started singing for the band, Still Life, which was later renamed 10,000 Maniacs.
