He was born to Peter Kuchar, a life insurance salesman, and college tennis pro, and Meg Kuchar, his wife, with one sibling named Rebecca. Matt attended Seminole High School in Sanford and graduated in 1996.

After finishing high school, Kuchar went to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, where he was a two-time first-team All-American on the Yellow Jackets’ golf team. He had an excellent amateur career, with his most notable victory coming in 1997, when he won the U.S. Amateur Championship.

In 1998, he received the Haskins Award as the nation’s top collegiate golfer, and he was the low amateur at both “The Masters” and “The U.S. Open.”
