Over twenty thousand actresses reportedly auditioned to bring life to the character, before selecting an up-and-coming Jennifer Lopez.
But before that, the production team considered other figures like Salma Hayek and Bibi Gaytan.
By then, Gloria de la Cruz was already making waves due to her surprising resemblance to the late musician.
Gloria, who was reportedly 18 year-old at the time, was from California and used the stage name Leticia Miller. She passed the audition.
Despite the resemblance, she was not considered for the final role. After some time, the young woman’s mysterious d*ath shocked the Latino community.
Some reports claim that Leticia won Selena’s role and even presented herself to the press.
Gloria de la Cruz’s body was found in a dumpster in the Wilshire district of Los Angeles. As reported by El Comercio, she had been tortured, strangled, and set on fire.
The young woman lived in the El Rio community. On 21 April 1996, she was last spotted at a party in Oxnard with friends.
Tragically, her burned-down body was found the next day in Wilshire. It took three years for the authorities to identify Corrie Robinson, the person responsible for the tragedy.
Robinson, who was a friend of Leticia/Gloria, had a history of violence against women. He was sentenced to life in prison.
He denied the crime, but he was eventually found guilty based on DNA and blood evidence.
Furthermore, Corrie se*ually assaulted Gloria in his grandmother’s garage in Oxnard before suffocating her.
He then put her lifeless body in his car trunk, drove to Wilshire, disposed of her in a dumpster, and set her on fire.
The extent of the damage to Gloria’s body delayed her identification by over fifteen days.
