He underwent a Bar Mitzvah, a significant Jewish coming-of-age ceremony, and was taught the values of politeness, care, and sensitivity by his maternal grandparents.

Born as Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, he identifies as an American by nationality.

He was raised by his mother, Edna, and his Russian-immigrant Jewish grandparents during his upbringing.

Despite his Irish roots, he once expressed a sense of detachment from that part of his heritage, stating, “The Irish part of me did not exist. It was gone and forgotten.”

Manilow completed his education at the now-defunct Eastern District High School in 1961. He enrolled at the City College of New York before transitioning to the New York College of Music, where he studied briefly. To support himself financially, he also took on employment at CBS.

Barry, the iconic singer, was born to Harold Kelliher and Edna Manilow. His father, a truck driver of Irish descent, had his name changed to Pincus at his mother’s insistence.

During his youth, he married his high-school sweetheart, Susan Deixler, in 1964. However, their union ended in 1966, resulting in their separation.

It wasn’t until 1978 that he began a romantic relationship with Garry Kief, a TV executive who would later become his manager.

In 2014, Barry and Garry tied the knot following the legalization of same-sex marriage in California. Their relationship and his sexual orientation had been kept private, but the news of their marriage garnered attention in 2015, making headlines worldwide.
