According to the Indiana State Police (ISP), the crash occurred around 8:30 pm on Ronald Reagan Parkway near Interstate 70.
Trooper Smith joined the police department in 2018.
As per the 2018 ISP post, it was revealed that Smith, a native of Whiteland, graduated from Whiteland High School, completing his education in 2008.

Indiana State Police: Aaron Smith Obituary
On Wednesday evening of June 28, 2023, Indiana State Police Trooper Aaron Smith lost his life in the line of duty during a vehicle pursuit.
And, as per the Master of the ISP, Trooper Nick Klingkammer, the incident originated as a police pursuit when troopers from the ISP’s Indianapolis district identified a stolen vehicle on the city’s southwest side.
The ISP Superintendent, Doug Carter, officially identified the trooper who tragically lost his life as Aaron Smith.
Superintendent Carter expressed his grief for the deceased troop. He said, “He was one of those guys that stood out. Not to be cliché, but he was a shining star for the Indiana State Police.”
Additionally, the individuals inside the suspect vehicle were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries determined to be non-life-threatening.
Indiana State Police: Aaron Smith Death Cause
After locating a stolen vehicle, the police attempted to halt the driver, resulting in a vehicle pursuit.
The pursuit continued onto I-70 and Ameriplex Parkway, close to the Indianapolis International Airport.
Troopers followed the suspect vehicle to Ronald Reagan Parkway, where one soldier, identified as Aaron Smith, was deploying stop sticks to halt the car and bring the chase to an end.
Smith was hit by the vehicle driven by the suspect, resulting in an impact. Subsequently, the suspect’s vehicle also crashed.
The trooper, Smith, was immediately rushed to Eskenazi Hospital in a critical condition.
Smith was immediately taken to the hospital; however, around 11 pm, the Indiana State Police announced that the trooper, Aaron Smith, had been declared deceased outside the hospital.

The adult passenger of the stolen vehicle, DeMareon L. Curry, has been provisionally charged with auto theft, categorized as a Level 5 felony.
According to officials, the suspect crashed shortly after colliding with the trooper.
Moreover, the Master of the ISP, Klingkammer, has said, “This is not only a crash investigation, but also a criminal investigation.”
Further, the ISP Superintendent, Douglas G. Carter, said, “This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family.”
Carter added, “We will band together as we always do to support Trooper Smith’s family, friends, and co-workers.”
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb also issued a statement regarding the passing of Trooper Smith.
Governor Holcomb wrote, “Trooper Smith lived and died a hero. His everlasting inspiration is a painful reminder of what the best among us sacrifice every day when they leave the house.”
Moreover, Smith is survived by his wife, and information regarding funeral arrangements has not yet been disclosed.
As the investigation progresses, the Hendricks County Prosecutor will determine these preliminary charges and the possibility of additional criminal charges.
