Andre Norman was born in the United States as an African American. He grew up during the Boston Busing crisis and witnessed domestic violence. The author’s Father was an abusive man.

He was raised by his mother alone with five other siblings. As  his father died when he was in first grade. The former prisoner’s mother worked hard to keep them out of debt. The academy of hope founder has not mentioned his date of birth but is in his forties as he was born during the Boston Busing crisis.

Andre’s upbringing, which included gang involvement and illiteracy, prepared him for nothing less than a life of crime and violence. He was ultimately given a prison term of more than 100 years for his actions.

However, even during his prison time, he was a gang leader and involved in harmful activities. Finally, the author decided to change for the better after he was separated from other inmates and started reading in the prison library.

After serving 14 years in jail, he was released in 1999; he works as a community mentor, corporate leadership consultant, and motivational speaker to audiences ranging from C-suite executives to at-risk youngsters worldwide.

Andre is married to a beautiful woman with a Ph.D. from MIT, and a master’s from Harvard. The couple has a son named Brooks Elliott Norman, born on June 27, 2005. He is not open about his family’s life.

as the author could not get the best education during his time. He wants his son to have it all as he learns about the vast difference an educated person can make in their life.

The former gang boss of the state learned that education is critical and that involving yourself in violence is not a way out.
