Hayley was rushed to the hospital, and the doctor announced the devastating news that she had a severe brain bleed, which required her to have an emergency craniectomy.
Derek was shocked to discover she wouldn’t be the same person even if the operation went successfully. He begged her not to die lying on the hospital floor by her bed.
Hayley was missing 40 percent of her skull and looked unrecognizable. She had to walk around with a helmet for a couple of weeks.
Although doctors told her it would take several months to heal, she was dancing after four months. She trusted her body and felt good about it.
Hayley began dancing at 3 and trained as a gymnast.
Luckily, she recovered and announced they would reveal their journey in a documentary form.
Derek made a video package after the married couple returned to the Dancing with the Stars with the footage from their wedding. He expressed,
It was kind of a crazy time because there was so much happening. We were newlyweds. I had just married the woman I love. The finale of Dancing with the Stars just happened, and Hayley and I were heading back on the road on the tour’s final leg, living out our dream on stage with the person we love. Then, it all just came to a screeching halt, most devastatingly.
