Routh’s path intertwined with Chris Kyle’s as they both attended the same high school.

The former marine enlisted in the US Marines in 2006, serving as an armorer and deploying to Iraq, the Middle East, and Haiti.

Witnessing the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti profoundly impacted him.

However, upon his return, he faced significant challenges with his mental health, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The shooter’s erratic behavior, marked by delusional episodes and a history of hospitalizations, eventually led to his diagnosis of PTSD.

He was prescribed potent medication to manage his condition but also turned to self-medication with marijuana and alcohol.

Unfortunately, Ray’s struggles with mental health persisted, resulting in serious depressive episodes.

After the killings, Routh displayed irrational behavior, including stopping at a Taco Bell to buy food before confessing to his sister at her house in Midlothian.

She immediately called 911, describing him as “crazy” and “psychotic.”

The perpetrator then returned home, picked up his dog, and engaged in a brief altercation with local police.

He made irrational statements about Hell, the end of the world, and voodoo.

Ray attempted to flee the scene in Kyle’s Ford F-350 truck but was captured by the police after a short freeway chase that ended with a collision with a police cruiser in Lancaster.
