Yeonmi Park is a North Korean defector and activist who is currently a best-selling author internationally, a TED Speaker, and a Youtuber.
After taking courses at Barnard College, the TED Speaker applied to and was accepted to Columbia University’s School of General Studies. She majored in economics and received her Bachelor of Arts in 2020.
However, the North Korean defector had a pretty tough time in her early years before settling in the U.S. She was in the spotlight after her story of escaping her native North Korea went viral and was heard internationally.

In 2017, the North Korean defector married Ezekiel, a citizen of the United States. But in 2020, the couple got divorced. Later, in January 2021, she claimed on her YouTube channel that she was now single and had grown apart from her ex-partner.
In addition, the activist also had a child together with her ex-husband in March 2018.

On October 4, 1993, in Hyesan, Ryanggang Province, North Korea, the North Korean defector was born to parents Park Jin Sik and Keum Sook Byeon.
The activist’s mother was a Korean People’s Army nurse, while her father was a civil servant who worked at her local town hall as a member of the country’s ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.
However, due to a serious case of appendicitis at the time, the YouTuber’s father was unable to finish his military service. For trafficking salt, sugar, and other spices illegally, her father was sentenced to prison in November 2002, after which the family started facing financial problems.
Moreover, Park’s family fled from North Korea to China in 2007, then made their home there until 2009, when they relocated to South Korea and finally the United States in 2014. The family had faced a lot of problems during their flight as they got sperated and were not able to support each other.
