Schroeder died on Monday in Celebration, Fla., a pioneering feminist parliamentarian who helped reinvent the role of women in American politics and then used her intellect to combat outrageous gender inequality in the House of Representatives.

The politician was 82 years old at the time of her death. Her daughter, Jamie Cornish, confirmed her death in the hospital from cardiovascular complications.

A pilot and Harvard-educated attorney, Nell had a long and illustrious career in the House of Representatives. She played a key role in the passage of the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which prohibited employers from firing women for being pregnant, as well as the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act, which guaranteed both men and women up to 18 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a family member.

The House of Representatives also supported legislation that helped reform spousal pensions, allowed women to serve in the military, and mandated that studies conducted by federally supported medical researchers include women.

Having opposed the Vietnam War when she ran for office in 1972, Scott spent 24 years on the Armed Services Committee, where she promoted arms control and lower military spending.

Former Colorado representative in the House of Representatives worked to increase military personnel benefits and convinced a committee to recommend allowing women to fly combat missions, which resulted in the first female fighter pilot flying a combat mission in 1995. One of the top 25 most dangerous politicians in the country, according to her conservative detractors.

From the beginning, Nell had to battle unequal treatment because she was asked how she could manage to be a mother of two young kids and a lawmaker.

The pioneer was raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and went to the University of Minnesota to study history. She earned a B.A. in 1961 and a J.D. from Harvard Law School the following year, in 1964.

From 1964 to 1966, Schroeder was employed by the National Labor Relations Board. Additionally, she was a legal advisor for Planned Parenthood and a Denver public school teacher.

On August 18, 1962, Pat married Jim Schroeder, a Harvard Law School classmate, and moved to Denver, Colorado. In 1970, her husband ran for the Colorado state legislature but lost by only 42 votes. This inspired Schroeder to consider a political career, and she ran for the seat on a platform of opposition to the Vietnam War.
