In an interview with The Sun, the former star footballer revealed that his wife, Kate Merson, gives him an allowance to stop him gambling.
This situation came about after he reportedly blew away £160,000, which was meant to be used for a house deposit.
The ex-pro was temporarily laid off from his job as a pundit on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday. At first, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, Kate, and their kids.
However, Merson soon became anxious about his career and financial future. He worried that Soccer Saturday might not return, and he wouldn’t be able to earn money.
Paul wanted to give his younger children just as he had for his older children. For this reason, he and Kate had saved £160,000, but he lost it all by betting online with a private bookie.
“I lost it all. I lost everything. I didn’t tell Kate at first. For the next week or so, I used to look at the kids and I used to hate myself with a passion.”

Paul added that he thought, “I just want to kill myself. How did you do that? How could you take their security?”
Following this incident, Kate reportedly set him a strict spending limit, which is only enough for fuel and basic shopping.

Regarding the allowance, Paul said
he “was resentful at first, like, ‘How dare you? I’m over 50 years of age. I’m more than happy now.”
The Sky Sports official added that “when he stopped drinking he took all the drink out of the house. Why not with gambling?”
It has been revealed that over three decades, the 56-year-old has lost £ 7 million career earnings due to his addictions.
Furthermore, Paul Merson’s six-figure earnings from Strictly Come Dancing will reportedly go straight to his wife, Kate.
