Late Fathima Beevi was the daughter of Annaveettil Meer Sahib and Khadeeja Beev. Likewise, the former judge was born into the Rowther Family.
Beevi’s family raised her at Pathanamthitta in the Kingdom of Travancore. The place is now called the Indian state of Kerala.
Beevi’s parents admitted her to the town school and Catholicate High School in 1943. Later, she attended Pathanamthitta.
Fathima made her family proud as she earned her BSc degree in chemistry from University College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Later, she pursued law and gained her B.L. from Government Law College.
Fathima was the eldest of eight children of her parents. Her father, Sahib, was a government employee in the registration department.
Likewise, her parents wholeheartedly supported and encouraged the educational aspirations of their children.
Mainly, her father supported his six daughters at a time when Muslim girls shied away from further education.
Reportedly, it was Fathima’s father who persuaded his daughter to go for a law course. Anna Chandy’s story inspired Sahib as she was the first woman judicial officer in the then-erstwhile Travancore state.

However, fewer details are available regarding Fathima Beevi’s husband. She lived her life away from the spotlight, mainly regarding her married life.
Beevi was strongly motivated toward her career goals as her father instilled his values in aspiring women.
Her father, Sahib, said that a post-graduation in Chemistry would get her into the teaching career. However, a law degree would help her climb up ladders.
The high values of her father always remained with her, and she began her law journey, following her father’s remarkable words.
Fathima Beevi Death and Obituary
Justice Fathima Beevi was born on 30 April 1927. She hailed from Kerala’s Pathanamthitta.
Beevi completed her graduation from the University College, Trivandrum. Also, she studied law at the Law College in Trivandrum.
Fathima enrolled as an advocate in November 1950. Likewise, she climbed her way up to serve as a district and sessions judge in 1974.
After retiring, Beevi became a member of the National Human Rights Commission. She served there between 1993 and 1997.
Moreover, she became the Governor of Tamil Nadu and left her office in 2001.
After the sad news of her passing on 23 November 223, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi expressed his sorrows, writing:
Her contributions to public service will always be remembered. My thoughts are with her family members in this sorrowful hour. May she rest in peace.
Moreover, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan demonstrated his condolences for Justice Beevi’s death.
The chief minister stated, “Her life is an inspiration to everyone, especially women.”
Furthermore, Kerala Health Minister Veena George condoled her demise as extremely painful.
Beevi was a brave woman who showed that willpower and a sensible purpose can overcome any adversity.
Beevi became the first woman from the Muslim community to be a member of the higher judiciary. Likewise, she overcame the negative aspects of social situations by taking them as challenges.
