Matty McNeil, his father, enjoyed a successful career as a striker in professional football. He is from Manchester, and until he was 20, he showed off his football skills in local leagues like the Middleton Sunday leagues and the Rochdale Saturday leagues.

During his professional debut in the 2005–06 Northern Final’s second leg against Carlisle United, Matty made a memorable impact by scoring and earning the man of the match title.
