David Bonderman, an American businessman, has passed away, leaving just his wife and five children.

Founding partner of the TPG Captial, formerly known as Texas Pacific Group, and its Asian affiliate Newbridge Capital, David passed away on December 11th, 2024.

Bonderman’s academic journey was equally noteworthy.

Born into a Jewish family in Los Angeles, California, on November 27, 1942, he excelled in his studies, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington in 1963.  

 

He furthered his education at Harvard Law School, earning a magna cum laude degree in 1966.

David Donderman’s Wife, Laurie Michaels, is a co-founder and benefactor of Open Road Alliance, a private philanthropic organization set up in 2012.

Dr. Michaels obtained her degree in Gardner’s vision and growth from Colorado State University and has worked to focus on areas where non-profits have a hard time funding.

In practice, through Open Road, she formed new ways of making grants to allow charities that faced unexpected challenges to be provided the needed assistance easily and quickly.

In philanthropy, Ms. Micheals is also active in the broader arena through advocacy, research, and leadership positions in different organizations.

She is on the board of directors of PATH and Search for Common Ground, where she advocates for risk and philanthropy strategies.

She graduated from Williams College and made several contributions to the field of psychology and philanthropy as well.

After his Passing, From his will, David passed down his legacy to his daughter 

David and his wife, Laurie, have built a life centered on shared philanthropic endeavors and family values, with their dedication to their five children within their home in Fort Worth, Texas.

Despite his numerous awards, such as the Golden Plate Award and the American Academy of Achievement, he prioritized spending time with his wife, their five kids, and three grandchildren.

Although details about his children and grandchildren are kept private, David was known for his love for life and family traditions.

He always ensured that he attended all family gatherings, from his kids’ school sporting matches to weekly outings.

Moreover, his kids have also paid tribute saying, 

We are all grateful for having experienced his wisdom, wit, generosity, and love. His zest for life, and his passions, especially sports and music, were infectious. He was always there for his friends and family, and we will miss him greatly.

Beyond his achievements, Bonderman had also prepared for the future through his will.

In addition to ensuring the continuity of his business ventures, he passed on his stake in the Seattle Kraken to his daughter, Samantha, who now continues his legacy as the team’s owner.

Nonetheless, Bonderman and his wife Laurie have shared a strong partnership, balancing their private family life with their impactful philanthropic initiatives.

  • In 2004, Bonderman was placed in the M&A Advisor Hall of Fame, and in 2017, he was placed in the Texas Business Hall of Fame.
