Raheem Sterling Family Background
Sterling was born on December 8, 1994, in Kingston, Jamaica, and spent his early years there. Sterling attributes his distinct running technique to his mother, Nadine Clarke, a former member of the Jamaican national athletics team and a competitive athlete.
When the athlete was two years old, his father was killed in Jamaica. He relocated to Neasden, London, with his mother when he was five years old, and he started attending the Copland School in Wembley, in northwest London. He attended Vernon House, a specialized school in Neasden, for three years as a result of behavioral issues.
He now identifies as English while playing for the national team as a professional soccer player. He had the option to sign on to play for Jamaica in international competition, just like everyone else born in Jamaica.
His decision became much simpler after he understood he had a chance to play a significant role for the England National Team. He frequently mentions in interviews that he considers England to be his home because he was raised there.
Before committing to Queens Park Rangers as a winger at the age of 10, Sterling played for the local youth team Alpha & Omega for four years. The academies of Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Liverpool, and Manchester City then scouted Sterling. He was advised by his mother, however, to avoid the neighborhood clubs in order to get away from London’s nasty gang culture.
After being capped by England’s under-16, under-17, under-19, and under-21 junior teams, Sterling made his senior squad debut for England in November 2012. He was selected for England’s squads for the UEFA European Championships in 2016 and 2020, as well as the FIFA World Cups in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
