Layla Taylor and her ex-husband Clayton Wessell finalized their divorce and the court order has strict rules

Layla Taylor joined Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives as one of the youngest cast members and one of the most relatable.

She was freshly out of a marriage, raising two small boys largely on her own, and figuring out who she was outside of a relationship that she would eventually describe publicly as extremely toxic. That description was not vague or dramatic.

The court documents that followed the divorce told a story that backed it up in concrete legal terms, and Us Weekly obtained the exclusive details of what those documents actually say.

Layla Taylor’s ex-husband is Clayton Wessell, a Utah-based salesperson who has remained largely out of the public eye despite his connection to one of Hulu’s most talked-about reality series.

The couple married in 2020 when Layla was just 19 years old. They had two sons together, Oliver Clay, known as Ollie, born in 2021, and Maxwell Dean, born in 2022.

By 2022, the couple had separated, though the legal process of ending the marriage took considerably longer than the decision to leave it.

Layla first filed for divorce on January 5, 2024. The court dismissed the case in March of that year, reportedly due to an unpaid fee. She refiled on February 20, 2025, and the final judgment was entered on May 28, 2025, more than 16 months after the original filing.

Throughout that period, Layla appeared on the show, built her social media following, and navigated a co-parenting situation she openly admitted was not yet peaceful.

In September 2024, she told Us Weekly, “Hopefully we can get to a more peaceful place. I think with him, there comes jealousy, and he found out about my boyfriend. So hopefully one day I’m praying that we can get to a point that we’re a lot more cordial.”

What the Divorce Order Actually Contains

The terms of the divorce were detailed and, in some areas, notably specific. The Utah court granted both parents joint legal and physical custody of Oliver and Maxwell, with a parent-time arrangement built around the principle that it is in the best interest of the children to have frequent, meaningful, and continuing access to both parents.

Neither Layla nor Clayton was awarded alimony. Each party keeps their own retirement accounts and bank accounts. Clayton was awarded a 2022 Hyundai Elantra.

On the financial side, Clayton earns approximately 10,000 dollars per month as a salesperson. Layla’s income from social media marketing was listed at 5,000 dollars per month at the time of the filing, a figure that has almost certainly grown since multiple seasons of the show have aired and her audience has expanded. 

The substance-related clauses in the order are among the most notable provisions. Both parents are legally prohibited from consuming alcohol while the children are in their care.

They are also prohibited from allowing the children to be in the presence of anyone the parties suspect or have reason to suspect may be under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or non-prescribed medication.

Both are also banned from using illegal drugs or exceeding the dosage on any legally prescribed medication. The court additionally ordered both parties not to speak ill of each other in front of the boys or in written communications such as emails and texts.

Where Things Stand Between Layla and Clayton Now

The substance clause in a Utah divorce judgment does not appear by accident. It reflects concerns raised during proceedings, and Layla’s own public comments about the marriage support that reading.

She has consistently used the word toxic to describe those years, and the legal framework the court put in place around the children suggests the proceedings were not entirely straightforward.

Since the divorce was finalized, Layla has moved forward publicly in ways that have surprised even her most loyal followers. She dated Mason McWhorter for nearly a year before a tearful breakup in February 2026.

Then, on June 29, 2026, she came out as bisexual on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast. Days later, she posted a video on Instagram holding the tattooed hand of a mystery girlfriend, captioning it with the words ” Chivalry is not dead, it is with the lesbians.

Clayton Wessell has said nothing publicly about any of it. He is a private man who co-parents two boys with a woman who has chosen to live her entire life in plain sight, and the court order they both signed ensures the children remain protected regardless of how differently their parents have chosen to navigate the world.
